Insulation

Attic, wall and crawlspace insulation with air sealing — the least glamorous work we do and, dollar for dollar, the most effective.

Overview

Air sealing first. Then insulation.

Insulation slows heat conduction. It does very little about air moving freely through gaps around can lights, top plates, plumbing penetrations and attic hatches. Blowing more insulation over an unsealed ceiling is like putting a thicker jacket on with the zip open.

So we seal first — every penetration between conditioned space and the attic — and then insulate to the right depth. In most homes this is the single highest-return item on the list, and it makes everything else we install work better.

Air sealing plus insulation is typically the best return per dollar in the house

What we include

Insulation services we provide

Attic air sealing

Sealing top plates, can lights, plumbing and electrical penetrations, ductwork boots and the attic hatch, before any insulation is added.

Blown-in attic insulation

Cellulose or fibreglass blown to a documented depth and R-value, with baffles keeping soffit vents clear.

Wall insulation

Dense-pack retrofit into existing wall cavities, or batt and spray foam where walls are already open during a remodel.

Duct insulation and sealing

Sealing and insulating ducts that run through unconditioned attic space, where the losses are largest.

Radiant barriers

Foil-faced barriers under the roof deck to reflect radiant heat before it reaches the insulation layer.

Crawlspace and floor insulation

Insulation and vapor control for raised-foundation homes, including rim joist sealing.

In detail

What we find in most attics

Insulation that has settled to half its rated depth. Recessed lights open straight into the attic. Ducts with disconnected boots delivering cold air into the space above the ceiling. Soffit vents blocked by insulation pushed into them years ago.

None of that is unusual and none of it is expensive to correct — it is just work that nobody sees, so it gets skipped. We photograph what we find, show you, and give you a scope that addresses the sealing and the insulation together.

Afterwards you get documentation of the R-value installed, the products used and the areas sealed, which is what rebate programs and future buyers will ask for.
